Note taking and critical textbook reading are skills most students do not develop in high school. This workshop explains the entire note taking process, from previewing before the lecture, to reviewing after class, with specific tips and tricks to learn more effectively in the classroom and later during review. We will also review the SQ3R method of reading college textbooks and ways that students can modify this method to fit different types of classes and different learning preferences. We'll include strategies for annotating in textbooks and how to best integrate the professor's study guides with reading and other class prep routines. Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to help students:
- recognize the value of taking effective notes in classes, or any event you want to remember;
- develop an effective and organized note taking system;
- understand the importance of previewing before class and reviewing after class; and
- implement strategies to manage reading assignments and learn more effectively from textbooks.
